Doppelmayr Cable Car
Automated People Mover in Oakland
The challenge
One of the components of the San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit System (BART) is a transport system that connects Oakland International Airport with the Coliseum rail station, a transportation hub in the city of Oakland. In cooperation with the construction consortium, a 5.1-km-long transit system was constructed by Doppelmayr Cable Car GmbH & Co KG (DCC). This transit line, constructed in 2014, allowed the automated people mover system to close a critical gap in the San Francisco Bay Area’s public transport system and to transport almost 1,500 people per hour in each direction at a maximum speed of 31 mph (50 km/h or 14 m/s).
The system consists of a total of four trains, each with three vehicles. When transporting people in autonomous, driverless systems, extremely stringent safety requirements have to be met. Naturally, these safety aspects had to be taken into account and incorporated during the design and construction of the entire network infrastructure.
The solution
The DCC system gained an edge in the bidding phase thanks to its simple and proven technology, its cost-effectiveness, environmental compatibility, the reliable iWLAN infrastructure with 4-fold redundancy, and a homogeneous Siemens Scalance network infrastructure.
And the in-depth knowledge of the experts at Wireless.Consulting GmbH also ensured an extremely high availability of data communication. In addition to systems for high priority control data, additional applications for VoIP, public safety (video transmission) and a passenger information system for communication from the trains to a central control center were put into place.
